Neighbors in Action provides anti-violence programs, youth programs, and resource links to community residents. Its mission is to encourage communication and understanding, prevent future conflicts, and help foster stronger, healthier neighborhoods. Save Our Streets (S.O.S.) Brooklyn includes two sites in Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy. S.O.S. is a replication of the Cure Violence program, a gun violence prevention model that aims to reduce and prevent shootings using public health strategies. Neighbors in Action is seeking a Violence Interrupter for the Save Our Streets (S.O.S.) Crown Heights program. Reporting to the Outreach Worker Supervisor, the Violence Interrupter will work individually and as part of a team to prevent neighborhood shootings and killings. They will provide conflict mediation services and serve as conduits to the program’s Outreach Workers who work with program participants on a long-term basis. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Work with community partners and the rest of the S.O.S. team to identify and diffuse “hot spots” for shootings and violence;, • Intervene in local conflicts to try to prevent an outbreak of violence, and work to prevent retaliations when violence does occur;, • Identify youth who are at-risk for being involved in violent activities and assist them in connecting to S.O.S., and/or other Neighbors in Action programs such as Make It Happen, Youth Programs, and Community Justice Connect, as well as referring them to other community organizations and resources as needed;, • Learn about the causes of shootings/killings in order to assist in mediating situations and preventing retaliation between individuals and groups (e.g., working with the community, conducting outreach programs to gain information that may be helpful in preventing additional killings);, • Form relationships with the people who are at the highest risk of experiencing violence in the community, as well as the people who know them;, • Conduct outreach to the community (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with youth, residents, and community groups;, • Engage with local businesses and storefronts to spread understanding of the S.O.S. mission, build relationships, and increase public recognition of S.O.S. in the community;, • Talk to residents in the S.O.S. Under this umbrella, Case managers provide comprehensive services to adolescents and young adults impacted by homelessness and involved in street activities (gangs, violence, drug use/sale and survival sex). We help children stay safe, families remain together, and newcomers navigate life in New York City. While our doors are open to all, AAFSC has expertise in serving Arab, Middle Eastern, North African, Muslim, and South Asian communities. JOB OBJECTIVE: To provide high-quality case planning, case work, and case management services to at-risk families referred by the Administration for Children’s Services. These families may be experiencing a wide range of challenges, including personal/marital/relationship problems, financial stressors, acculturation issues, family destabilization, and/or parent/child conflict. The Case Planner provides intensive preventive services to avoid foster care placement and ensure the safety and welfare of children in the home. He or she provides the family with services according to ACS standards and requirements. The Case Planner follows a Solution Based Casework (SBC) practice model. SBC is based on three theoretical foundations: family life cycle theory, relapse prevention/CBT theory, and solution-focused family therapy. Partnership with families in each and every case is critical to reducing risks and solutions should utilize prevention skills to achieve those goals. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Case Management & Advocacy Ensure timely completion of SBC training & certification. Conduct home visits and office visits to assess child safety and risk elements, complying with ACS requirements. Face-to-face contacts should be conducted twice per month, at a minimum and includes home visits (two home visits must be conducted if children 0-2 years old are present) and office visits (e.g., school, doctor’s office, AAFSC), as well as other out-of-home visits (e.g., park).
