Job Description Position Overview: The position of the Mechanic is to maintain, diagnose and repair fleet vehicles, specializing on buses. The mechanic is responsible for repairing and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues, striving toward maximum reliability, functionality and safety. General Duties/Responsibilities: • Responsible for preventative maintenance such as changing tires, batteries, lights, controls, safety equipment, power steering, fluids, filters, etc., • Responsible for fleet condition by performing diagnostic testing repairs and rebuild of fleet vehicle components such as engines, transmissions, brake systems, electrical, mechanical, internal and external components, etc., • Responsible for scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, including body repairs, HVAC systems, electrical systems, steering, suspension systems, brake systems and drivetrain components., • Responsible for DOT inspections and document results to insure that vehicles meet N.Y. State DOT regulations., • Performs and analyzes diagnostic testing., • Responsible for operating vehicles while in strict compliance with Company policies, directives, and procedures and all traffic laws and regulations., • Conducts road tests to ensure fleet vehicles are operating in a safe and reliable manner, salt roads and participates in snow removal as needed., • Performs on-the-road repairs and road calls when necessary., • Effectively communicates with supervisors regarding equipment concerns and observations., • Utilizes various types of tools such as hand and power tools to perform repairs., • Maintains and repairs shop equipment as needed., • Responsible for performing all tasks in a safe manner, in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents., • Interprets and applies knowledge from vehicle service manual and schematics to assist in the completion of repairs., • Performs system upgrades, campaigns and modifications on fleet vehicles as needed., • Participates in safety and educational training as required., • Assists fellow mechanics with repairs as needed., • Maintains equipment and work space safety and cleanliness Position Qualifications: • Required a minimum High School Diploma, GED or equivalent., • ASE certification preferred., • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a mechanic preferred., • Must have and maintain an excellent Driver’s License, valid CDL preferred. CDL license required preceding the 5th month of employment as a mechanic., • Must have knowledge of technical and diagnostic equipment, including computer comprehension., • Must have a complete set of hand tools, in accordance with the department’s tools list., • Must be able to work any scheduled hours such as dayshift, nightshift, weekends, holidays, floater and overtime as needed., • Must have the ability to operate all mechanical equipment., • Must be able to document repairs, and diagnosis on assigned transit vehicles., • Must have a basic understanding of the design, adjustment, overhaul operation and maintenance of transmissions, heavy-duty engines and other fleet components., • Required to read schematics, maintenance manuals and interpret safety documents., • Must have excellent communication skills. Physical and Sensory Requirements: • Ability to climb stairs, reaches above shoulder level, walk extended distance, stand, kneel, sit for an undefined amount of time., • Ability to work in an environment with dust, fumes, exhaust, various noise levels, various temperatures, indoor and outdoor weather conditions for an undefined amount of time., • Ability to read, write and converse in English., • Ability to have discretion., • Ability to bend and lift without assistance up to 50 lbs., • Ability to push and pull a wide range of equipment, up to 100 lbs. without assistance., • Must be able to work in extreme heat, cold and in a damp environment., • Ability to physically and visually inspect equipment and fleet vehicles., • Ability to pass a DOT physical examination for Maintenance and 19A for part-time driving.

Job Description General Summary We are seeking a skilled HVAC Technician to join our team to be responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and servicing of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. You will work independently on advanced mechanical and electrical issues, support road-call and emergency repair needs, and help guide less-experienced technicians. Your technical expertise will directly support fleet safety, vehicle availability, regulatory compliance, and the reliable transportation of students throughout the community. Diesel Technician Key Responsibilities Include: • Ensure vehicles are properly maintained and safe for our passengers., • Diagnose and perform all phases of vehicle maintenance and repair., • Perform advanced diagnostics on mechanical, electrical, engine, transmission, emissions, and related vehicle systems., • Repair brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmission clutches, engines, steering systems, and other major vehicle components., • Diagnose and repair electrical, starting, charging, lighting, and electronic control systems., • Perform preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections., • Identify mechanical and safety concerns before vehicles are returned to service., • Complete complex repairs accurately and efficiently., • Evaluate completed work and verify that repairs meet First Student and regulatory standards., • Complete work orders accurately, including all labor, parts, supplies, diagnostic findings, and corrective actions., • Notify maintenance leadership of potentially dangerous equipment and recommend corrective action., • Assist with road calls, breakdowns, and mobile emergency repair services., • Support and mentor Tech I and Tech II employees with diagnostics, repairs, inspections, and technical development., • Assist maintenance leadership with troubleshooting difficult or recurring fleet issues., • Move vehicles safely between work and service areas., • Maintain an organized shop and clean work environment., • Follow all First Student safety standards, policies, procedures, and applicable DOT requirements., • Perform other duties as assigned.Diesel Technician Qualifications, • At least five years of automotive or diesel maintenance and repair experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and hands-on experience., • High school diploma or GED preferred., • Vocational or technical certification in automotive or diesel repair preferred., • Advanced vehicle diagnostic and problem-solving skills., • Strong experience diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, brakes, suspensions, drivetrains, transmissions, electrical systems, and related components., • Experience performing preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and annual vehicle inspections., • Ability to work independently on complex repairs with minimal supervision., • Ability to guide and support less-experienced technicians., • Valid driver's license required., • CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement preferred., • Ability to obtain a CDL Class B with Passenger endorsement within three months of employment; company-paid training is provided., • ASE certifications preferred., • Willingness to participate in and maintain required certifications through First Student's ASE program., • Possession of a complete mechanic's tool set sufficient to perform all assigned duties., • Strong computer skills and experience completing electronic work orders and maintenance records., • Strong customer service and communication skills., • Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team., • Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and full attendance., • Strong commitment to fleet safety, quality repairs, and reliable service.Physical Requirements and Working Conditions, • Ability to work in a maintenance shop environment with dust, dirt, and grease., • Ability to work under varying weather conditions., • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds., • Ability to work in crouched, kneeling, standing, and lying positions., • Ability to work beneath vehicles while using a mechanic's creeper., • Ability to safely perform physically demanding maintenance and repair duties throughout the shift.
